In the advent of much needed arts and music education being cut from schools and after-school programs, we intend to bridge the achievement gap through authentic, hands-on arts enrichment and youth development programming by any means necessary. Through our “Brushes & Books” after-school program, middle and high school students are exposed to a plethora of different art mediums. Mediums offered are:
Through our “Exposure Is Everything - Black College Tour” The “Exposure Is Everything” Black College Tour is a student travel experience designed to expose Akron Public high school juniors to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) across the United States. Students who embark on this life altering travel experience will also be exposed to historical landmarks, museums; and entertainment and recreational outlets. As career educators, we fully recognize the value and importance of a college education. This is the reason why the “Exposure is Everything” Black College Tour exists—to increase the numbers of African-American students who enroll, graduate, from a Historically Black College or University. Presently, we have two tours available, our Southern U.S. tour and our Eastern/Mid-Atlantic Tour. Southern U.S. Tour Our Southern U.S. tour captures the essence of Historically Black College and Universities in the southern region of the United States. We will visit large and small HBCU’s throughout the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, plus we will also visit a select few traditional white colleges in these states as well. Eastern/Mid-Atlantic Tour Our Eastern/Mid-Atlantic U.S. tour captures the essence of Historically Black College and Universities in the Eastern/Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. We will visit large and small HBCU’s throughout the states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington D.C., West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, plus we will also visit a select few traditional white colleges in these states as well.

Probably not if you're like most rap fans out there with their heads still stuck in Jay-Z's new book, "Decoded."
And just like just about everything Jay does, expect this to start a trend. Last week Chicago rapper Common announced that he will also be releasing a memoir, "One Day It'll All Make Sense," sometime next spring. The Roots drummer Questlove is reportedly working on a book set to drop in 2011 called "Mommy, What's A Questlove?" And another book about Jay-Z's life, "Empire State of Mind: How Jay-Z Went from Street Corner to Corner Office," is already slated to hit stores next March. Some excerpts from Jay's book include: What "99 Problems" Is Really About In the book, he reveals that the famous line from his 2004 song "99 Problems" — "I got 99 problems but a b*%#^ ain't one" — is not about a woman but a female dog, or the dogs he dodged that day. "It would have changed my life if that dog had been a few seconds faster," he writes. The Dangers of Hip-Hop Stardom Jay also writes about his 2003 collaboration with Eminem, "Moment of Clarity." At the studio session, Jay went to hug his friend, and realized Em was wearing a bulletproof vest. Jay writes that Em should have been "on a boat somewhere" rather than living in fear for his life. A Notorious Blunt Flat Champagne If you just finished reading "Decoded," there are also plenty of other rap memoirs that are also worth your time. If you loved Hov's book, try throwing one of these selections onto your Christmas list. You won't be disappointed: WES FELTON & ALGEBRA will perform live as part of The KEEPERS LOUNGE CONCERT SERIES @ The Stage Door/EJ Thomas Hall - Saturday, February 18th - MORE INFO HERE |

Akron, Ohio. Hip-Hop Flavas was designed to fuse “true-school” rap music (past and present) with relevant social commentary.

The book came in at no. 3 on the New York Times Best Sellers list for hardcover, non-fiction books — right behind George W. Bush's memoir, "Decision Points." Not a bad look for Hov, whose decision to talk to everyone from Howard Stern to Hot 97 when his book dropped clearly paid off in a big way.
No N---a," which Jay was filming with Foxy Brown in Miami in 1996. Jay-Z says he was never much of a pot smoker and only did so on vacation. "I could count the number of times I'd smoked trees," he writes. But when Big offered him a smoke, he thought to himself, "Relax, you're not on the streets anymore." So he smoked — and got completely wasted, just as the video shoot was to begin. Seeing what he had done, Biggie laughed and whispered to Jay, "I got ya." Jay said it took him 20 minutes to pull himself together. Later on, he told Big, "Never again, my n---a."
