H.E.L.P., or Hip Hop Educational Literacy Program, is a series of supplemental reading workbooks designed to HELP students of all reading levels through the innovative usage of Hip Hop lyrics for critical analysis, multicultural relevance, and effective literacy instruction.
Teachers frequently worry about how to keep their students interested in learning and struggle to compete against the world outside school and popular culture. Many students feel that they cannot relate to their teachers, or they believe their teachers aren't being prepared to fully understand or know about the world in which they live. H.E.L.P. is designed to bridge the communication gap between students and teachers by using popular Hip Hop music to teach literacy.
As we all know, Hip Hop music has a wide reach that expands across all boundaries of culture, race, language, and socio-economic background. In essence, H.E.L.P. uses the language of the youth with authentic literacy activities to teach reading and writing skills and foster a cuturally responsive dialogue between students and teachers.
The 2008 "Rap On Rap" content analysis study of three popular video shows on BET and MTV (Rap City, 106 & Park and Sucker Free) found that during theirperspective airtime hours, there are about 1,342 instances of offensive/adult content, for an average of 95.8 instances per hour, 1.6 instances per minute, orone instance of adult content every 38 seconds. With Rap music influencing our young people more than any social phenomenon, it is imperative that we provide them with a sound historical perspective of Hip Hop culture and its music. Wecan nolonger allow popular mainstream outlets, who's main purpose is "profit over people" to continue to corrupt our young people's minds, values and morals.
