The secret of how long they last without going bad has more to do with the preparation of their chicken, French fries, and hamburgers. All foods contain microbes, and if these microbes do not have the ideal environment to survive and thrive in, then the food that they are found in will keep for a much longer period of time.
Business Insider took a tour of a McDonald’s factory in Günzburg, Germany to see how they are really made. About 5 million burgers are produced in this factory every single day and it’s one of the largest OSI Group factories. It’s also one of the biggest suppliers of hamburgers for teh McDonald’s franchise.
Hygeine is a top priority at the factory and anyone who enters it must put on protective clothing and wash their hands. Employees who are sick are not allowed to go to work and there are many other strict protocols in place to avoid contamination.
Jewelry is also not allowed to be worn and plastic pens are forbidden to prevent any possible contamination of the food processed there. The meat is also checked to ensure that there are no bines and large pieces of meat are ideal because that reduces the likelihood of contamination.
Once processed, the meat is then placed in large 500 kilogram containers and since the demand for roughly that amount of meat needs to be met daily it’s important that everything at the factory works smoothly and efficiently.
The meat is shaped into patties and they’re frozen and then packed and shipped to another factory next door before being shipped to the restaurants. The burgers are constantly checked for quality control as well to ensure that they’re always up to standards of OSI Group.
