OSI Food Solutions: The growth of a small meat shop to an iconic empire

OSI Food Solutions Group started as a small meat market but has become a business partner to many food-related organizations. Right from its humble beginnings at Illinois, the company has made significant strides which have created a fascinating history. Otto Kolschowsky founded it in 1909 two years after his arrival in the United States. Over the next decades, the company grew and adopted a name, Otto & Sons.

Otto & Sons would establish a strong reputation through partnerships with other unparalleled businesses. Its first partnership was with an entrepreneur in Illinois who had obtained the rights to establish a chain of burger restaurants. With the first franchise opening Des Plaines, Illinois in 1955, Otto & Sons became the primary supplier of ground beef patties.

OSI Food Solutions Group continued to evolve through its operations which quickly resulted in greater growth both in the country and the world. OSI Group McDonalds Addressees Customers on the Use of Preservatives

There have been several claims that the McDonalds fast food joint uses preservatives for its foods. The controversy especially surrounds their hamburgers which many worry contain preservatives that are not healthy. McDonalds has made endless efforts to assure all their consumers that their hamburgers have no preservatives or added chemicals and they are healthy to consume. Despite this, people are still not letting McDonald’s off the scrutiny when it comes to food safety. Food safety has become search a controversial topic among many people, and there is a growing concern with what foods contain. Some of the ingredients that cause so much worry among consumers include added sugars, additives, and preservatives. A visit to the OSI Group factory where the hamburgers are made was arranged to clear the air on the rumors of preservatives.

OSI Group owns the factory which makes all the food products for McDonald’s. OSI Group is a large food distribution company and the sole provider to McDonald’s chain. In the factory, we witnessed how the hamburger is made from the minute it enters the facility until the moment it leaves. One evident fact is that the hamburgers are made fresh and no added preservatives are used in them. Also, we noticed that the meat is handled with uttermost care to ensure no room for contamination is provided. All employees need to pass a certain level of health to work at the factory. If any employees show any signs of getting sick such as flu, they are excused from work to minimize the amount of bacteria and infection in the factory. To know more about the company click here.

The meat is also handled with care by use of protective gear such as hair nets and hand gloves. Raw meat can get contaminated easily especially if it comes in contact with germs. Therefore, everyone is required to be clean and disinfected before handling the meat. Both manual and mechanical methods are used to sort out bones from the meat. At first, the staff members check for the bones and after that, a meat processor also is used to remove bones. This careful meat vetting process guarantees customers the meat reaching them is 100% quality and safe.

McDonald’s Burgers Don’t Need Preservatives to Stay Fresh

If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like inside a McDonald’s factory you don’t have to wonder anymore. For one, it’s very clean and sanitized, so you don’t have to worry about eating a contaminated burger.

Many people think that their burgers contain an incredible amount of preservatives, but it has been found that they do not contain preservatives. The secret of how long they last without going bad has more to do with the preparation of their chicken, French fries, and hamburgers. All foods contain microbes, and if these microbes do not have the ideal environment to survive and thrive in, then the food that they are found in will keep for a much longer period of time.

Business Insider took a tour of a McDonald’s factory in Günzburg, Germany to see how they are really made. About 5 million burgers are produced in this factory every single day and it’s one of the largest OSI Group factories. It’s also one of the biggest suppliers of hamburgers for teh McDonald’s franchise.

Hygeine is a top priority at the factory and anyone who enters it must put on protective clothing and wash their hands. Employees who are sick are not allowed to go to work and there are many other strict protocols in place to avoid contamination.

Jewelry is also not allowed to be worn and plastic pens are forbidden to prevent any possible contamination of the food processed there. The meat is also checked to ensure that there are no bines and large pieces of meat are ideal because that reduces the likelihood of contamination.

Once processed, the meat is then placed in large 500 kilogram containers and since the demand for roughly that amount of meat needs to be met daily it’s important that everything at the factory works smoothly and efficiently.

The meat is shaped into patties and they’re frozen and then packed and shipped to another factory next door before being shipped to the restaurants. The burgers are constantly checked for quality control as well to ensure that they’re always up to standards of OSI Group.

JD.com is Venturing into Fresh Food

The soil in China has suffered much over the years, due to an increased demand being placed on farmers to the large quantity of premium-quality consumer produce. Fertile soil deterioration is not an issue isolated to China, nations across the world are experiencing soil fallout, thanks to over processing, pesticide and soil nutrient pollution. The result is a crop that is no longer viable, while annual crop yields continue to decrease as time progresses. In countries where agriculture is an essential concept of their survival, hydroponic farming is a feasible substitute.

In collaboration with Mitsubishi Chemical, Jingdong has decided to venture into the fresh food production industry.

The newly built Jingdong Hydroponic Plant Factory is an 11,040 square meter building equip with solar and artificial lighting, along with a hydroponic culturing system of environmentally isolated seedlings. The factory is located in the industrial, Tongzhou district of Southeast Beijing. The factory is expected to mass produce these agricultural products. All the fruits, vegetables, and herbs being launched in December 2018, are expected to be a minor feature of a whole series of vegetable, herb, fruit products anticipated to be introduced in the future.

The project is 100% safe and an excellent alternative to conventional agricultural farming methods that have contributed to countrywide land lost and pollution. JD.com says that each batch of seedlings at the JD factory, are given optimal growing conditions, and monitored throughout their growing phase. Because growth hormones, pesticides, and agrochemicals were not used in the growing phase of the plants, Jingdong says that there is no need for the plants to be washed before consumption.

The produce will be available for purchase at JD.com’s online store, as well as the company’s supermarket, 7FRESH. All product orders are fulfilled at the time of purchase. Depending on the delivery location, order type, and product availability, most orders can be delivered the same day thanks to JD.com’s expertise in technology and dedication to customer satisfaction. Jingdong wants customers to know that they take pride in their product, and view each plant produced as an extension of themselves.

The fresh food production sector at Jingdong, will be overseen by Xiaosong Wang, President of JD FMCG and Food Businesses. Click here

OSI Group McDonalds COO David McDonald

The OSI Group was born and bred from the deep German tradition of efficiency and trustworthiness in quality, the American tradition of expansionism and protection, and the global traditions of family values for all. OSI Group McDonalds got their claim to fame by sheer proximity to a little burger joint by the name of McDonald’s, back in Deplaines Illiniois in the 1950’s, with a guy named Ray Kroc. Otto and Son’s, as it was known back then, was run by a few German immigrants living in Chicago’s meat-packing district. With McDonalds being so close relative to Chicago and in such need of a reliable and proficient meat supplier, it’s no wonder why the two became inseparable since the beginning.

OSI Group McDonalds currently exists in over 17 countries worldwide, has around 20,000 employees who call OSI Group McDonalds their employer, and operate from 65 different plant locations. With such vigor, tenacity, and friendliness having been established from the start, it is no wonder that their company caught on like wildfire within family-style working communities across the globe. Perhaps in an effort to not seem as “mom-and-pop” as they did with the name Otto and Sons, the group formally renamed themselves OSI Group McDonalds as soon as they hired a CEO in 1975 who was already familiar with navigating the waters of running a global organization. Sheldon Lavin was his name, and he still runs OSI Group McDonalds to this very day alongside COO David McDonald.

David is an enigma in is own right, as well, having graduated with an agricultural sciences degree from Iowa State, having six kids and a wife of his own, and figuring out the incredibly foreign laws and regulations surrounding not one but seventeen other countries across the world. He is a friendly person and believes in the power of family, stating that, “It is important to note that, within OSI, we value family. Our people and our customers are viewed as family. The products that we make should be good enough to serve to our respective families proudly.”

After the second world war, the company, then known as Otto and Sons, made an important business relationship that would quickly catapult them into the forefront of the food industry. Otto and Sons was contracted to be the ground beef provider for the very first McDonald’s franchise in Illinois. As McDonald’s grew into a household name, their original meat supplier continued to expand as well.

OSI Industries was tasked as one of the first food suppliers to provide a consistent and repeatable product over and over again so that customers knew exactly what they were getting from a restaurant. The business heavily invested in technology that could create a high quality product over and over again. This paved the way for the modern food producer to be able to meet the growing needs of consumers. Recently, the Australian branch of the company has merged with Turi Foods which is one of the largest poultry suppliers in the world.

The new company will be called Turosi Pty Ltd, a combination of both company names. Both companies bring industry expertise to the deal that will be mutually beneficial. OSI Industries has recognized the importance of partnering with those in the industry who have a proven track record of meeting customer demands with the highest quality food and the lowest possible prices. The food industry is constantly changing because of changing industry regulations as well as new customer demands.
