According to Forbes.com, George Soros has been a major player in the financial scene since he began managing client money in New York from 1969 all the way up to 2011. Recently, he has come back into the financial world with his generous contribution to The Open Society Foundations. These Foundations are dedicated to supporting individuals and organizations in over 100 different countries. The sole purpose of this company is to help those that have felt persecuted for who they are. Soros does not suffer needless persecution, and his work with The Open Society Foundations respect his desire to see a positive change in the world.
George Soros did not begin his life as the whirlwind success that the public knows and loves today. Born in 1930 in Hungary, his beginnings were meager. According to Opensocietyfoundations.org, the biggest earmark of his early life was that he survived through a Nazi-occupied Hungary, during a time when more than 500,000 people of Jewish heritage were heavily persecuted and murdered. To survive, his family acquired forged papers and even when as far as to help as many families as they could escape a horrible fate. Soros still looks at that experience as a time where, not only did his family survive, but they banded together to help other people who were in need. This experience helped Soros go on to create the Open Society Foundations.
Soros put himself through school in London through various jobs, eventually obtaining a degree in Economics before immigrating to the United States. In 1970, he launched Soros Fund Management. This proved to be a very successful endeavor and Soros finally began developing the Open Society Foundation with some of the proceeds. This foundation would become his passion, and he would eventually end up contributing over 30 billion dollars to it. Recently, Soros donated 18 billion to the socially forward network of foundations. He has been instrumental in pushing forward many important social and global issues with his philanthropy. He has never wanted people to feel like they live in a society where they are not free to express themselves.
According to The Jerusalem Post even though Soros has given so much of his personal wealth, he has also been the target of outlandish conspiracy theories that pose him as a monster. A major funder of the democratic party, Soros has made powerful political enemies. They seek to besmirch his charitable reputation. The worst part is, that people are willing to believe these rumors because they fear someone that is capable of large-scale giving. Soros has shown that he does not intend to use his power for evil gains, he has always focused on programs that look out for the population. His legacy shows a man that has always been willing to donate to good causes. He has worked hard his entire life to help those that might not have access to the same resource that he has. Regardless of what conspiracy theorists and philanthropic demonizers say, Soros will continue to be a beacon for those individuals in the world that feel threatened or marginalized.
